Online Foundations in Physical Activity and Exercise course


This asynchronous, online course covers basic fitness principles such as anatomy, physiology, movement mechanics, training and conditioning, risk management and leadership. This is the pre-requisite course for all Fitness Alberta specialties. 

The course is designed to allow participants to work through independent study over a 4-week period. Non-graded, check in assignments and quizzes are provided throughout the course to support your work through the material. 

Online learning is best for learners who are good at setting their own schedule, organizing information and working through assignments on their own. Note: You will need a reliable online environment to complete this course. 

What to expect in this course

Foundations in Physical Activity lays the foundation for the rest of your certification journey. Most candidates require independent study before writing the Foundations theory exam. To help you prepare: 

  • Your online course provides many learning activities to guide your understanding of the course content.  
  • The learning objectives in each chapter indicate the knowledge you are expected to retain and apply. These are an excellent study tool during and post course.
  • The performance standards are also helpful for you to understand the knowledge and competencies you will be required to demonstrate, either through practical assessment or written exam to earn certification.
