Requirements
Here are the requirements to renew your certification:
-
1
Earn 12 continuing education credits
Continuing education is required so that you stay current in best practice for our industry. We recommend that you take CECs throughout your 2-year certification period, rather than waiting til the last minute. CECs can be earned by attending conferences, workshops, online webinars, or taking Fitness Alberta specialty courses.
Please note:
- Courses, webinars and workshops can be delivered by Fitness Alberta or pre-approved for CECs by Fitness Alberta
- You can petition for CECs for courses you have taken from a non-Fitness Alberta provider that have not been pre-approved
- CEC courses used in past recertifications can't be taken again
- CECs that were unused in previous recertifications can't be carried forward to the next recertification
-
2
Schedule a practical assessment
Group exercise leaders must take a practical assessment on the first recertification of each specialty.
- After your first recertification in a specialty, you are exempt from further practical assessments in that specialty
-
3
Send in your information and current CPR
Please note that your recertifications takes 3-4 weeks to verify and process. Submit your information in the first week of the month your recertification is due, so that your insurance and certification status remain valid. Here's what you'll need to have ready:
- Your CEC information, e.g. Names and dates of conferences, workshops, and courses, as listed in your profile, or names of courses taken through the Fitness Alberta online learning platform
- Copy of current CPR card (compatible formats are pdf, png, jpg, doc, or docx)
- CPR must have been issued within the last 12 months, and valid for at least 3 weeks after recertification date. (Your insurance is not valid if your CPR is not current.)
- Update your CPR through an approved provider. (FAB does not accept online CPR)
-
4
Late Recertification policy
Life happens. We understand. If you can't complete your recertification by the expiry date for any reason, you still have time. Late fees will apply after 6 and 12 months, and additional renewal requirements will apply over 1 year late. Contact us for information on your late renewal requirements.
Important to know:
- Your insurance and certification status are not valid, once your recertification date has passed
- Late recertification does not extend the date of your next recertification. For example: If your recertification is due September 30, 2024 and you renewal is processed on February 7, 2025, your next certification renewal date will be September 30, 2026
- There is a 30-day grace period, after which late fees will be applied when you renew
