Build on your Certification

You've done the work. You've earned your certification. Now you can build on that!

Whether you hold one certification or three, your renewal fee and insurance cost are the same. Here's how to add another specialty to your certification.

Step 2: Complete a practical exam in your new specialty

To earn certification in your new specialty, you are required to take the practical exam. You have a year from completing your course to complete the practical exam and submit your documents to add on your new specialty.

Step 3: Add your new specialty

Once you've completed your course and practical exam, you can add your new specialty. Just like your current certification, your CPR must be current within the last 12 months.

Renew Your Certification

Your new specialty's renewal requirements will be automatically aligned to your current certification timeline. For the first renewal in your new specialty, you need to complete a practical assessment.
Practical assessment timeline for specialty added MORE one year from your current renewal date
If you add your specialty more than one year before your next recertification date, your practical assessment is due with that next recertification. For example:

Your next recertification date is May 31, 2026 and you add your specialty before May 31, 2025. In this case, your practical assessment for that specialty is due by your May 31, 2026 renewal date.
Practical assessment timeline for specialty added LESS than one year from your current renewal date
If you add your new specialty LESS than one year before your next recertification date, your practical assessment will be due on the following recertification date. For example:

Your next recertification date is May 31, 2026. You added your new specialty in November 2025. In this case, your practical assessment for that specialty will be due on your May 31, 2028 recertification.
